One of the most common contaminants that are currently polluting bodies of water in and around the United Kingdom is human sewage.
Over the past two years, water companies in the UK have released sewage into UK rivers and dams over 770,000 times.
After heavy rainfall in the UK in September 2022, warnings about pollution were issued for over 100 beaches in Britain due to the release of untreated sewage into the ocean. This resulted in even more increased anger from the British public over the situation within their country.
The impact of this on people’s health has been detrimental. One UK-based environmental organisation stated that throughout 2022, they received 720 illness reports from surfers and people who swam in the surrounding seas.
However, the UK has a long history of facing challenges with sewage management and treatment, including issues such as overflows during heavy rainfall, pollution of rivers and coastal waters, and the release of untreated sewage into the environment.
Several wild swimmers, environmental charities, and UK citizens have begun to hold these water companies, the Environmental Agency (EA) and the UK Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) accountable for these sewage problems, asking the government in particular, to take action.
It was seen that even parties outside of the UK began to take notice of the extremity of sewage issues within the country. Towards the end of 2022, three French MEPs accused the UK of endangering human health, marine life, and fishing by discharging untreated sewage into the Channel and the North Sea.
In a letter they wrote, they acknowledged that although no longer bound by EU regulations, the UK is still obligated to preserve the seas surrounding it and shared with other nations.
Since then, the UK government and water companies have been trying to work towards upgrading and improving treatment processes to address these problems.
As a step forward, the British government implemented a Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan 2022 to lessen the complaints from seaside communities, environmentalists and citizens about the UK sewage problem. The plan was created in hopes that it may be a start towards finding a solution for Britain’s long-standing sewage issues and contamination.
